It is bad form to take on a transaction that seems likely to need to tap its political risk insurance.
This can take many forms, including political risk insurance from private insurers or public insurers such as export credit guarantee agencies, and the use of credit default swaps (CDS - an agreement that pays compensation to the buyer of the CDS linked to an underlying loan in the event of loan default) or other derivatives.
Political risk insurance
The most common way of insuring against country risks is through political risk insurance (PRI).
In the context of PRI, political risks are arbitrary or discriminatory actions, taken by home or host governments, political groups, or individuals, which have an adverse impact on cross-border flows.
